At Edgware, we teach using the Sounds-Write programme. It is a quality first phonics programme and is acknowledged by the DfE as meeting all its criteria for an effective phonics teaching programme. It is a mediated learning programme. Children learn a set of letters, each week, in a clear teaching sequence, through active learning. Teachers model the learning process and children participate with the teacher until they become independent.
Learning to read is complicated and relies on two key processes:
- word reading through the recognition and decoding of words, and
- comprehension of texts through a range of knowledge and skills.
Parents can support phonics understanding by hearing your child read daily
Encourage your child to sound out words that are unfamiliar or tricky.
You can also play games with the letters and sounds.
