Reception
Welcome to our Reception Page.
Learning in Reception builds on what children already know and can do. As we have children who have not always been in our nursery, we ensure that the settling in period is structured. We aim for children to gain independence and settle into routines quickly. We ensure that we build good relationships; our priority it to make children feel safe so they are ready to learn.
We continue to develop a sense of curiosity and a love of discovery through an engaging, bespoke curriculum which focuses on the children's interests as well as planned themes.
Our approach continues to be guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, which supports development across seven key areas: communication and language, personal, social and emotional development, physical development, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, and expressive arts and design.
Children are encouraged to explore and learn through play, building essential skills in a meaningful and enjoyable way. Our experienced staff carefully balance adult-led and child-initiated activities, allowing children’s interests to shape their learning. This responsive approach helps children make connections between their experiences and the wider world, nurturing both confidence and creativity.
Language and communication are at the heart of everything we do. Pupils are supported to express themselves through storytelling, songs, role play, and discussion, helping to build rich vocabulary, active listening skills and confidence in speaking.
Mathematical development in Reception is hands-on, engaging and rooted in real-life experiences. Children develop early number skills through games, stories, songs and practical activities such as counting objects, measuring ingredients, exploring shapes, and solving simple problems in play scenarios. We use concrete resources like counters, number lines and tens frames to build strong number sense and lay the foundations for confident mathematical thinking. Children apply their knowledge of maths in their play.
Outdoor learning is a vital part of Reception life. Our well-designed outdoor space offers daily opportunities for children to develop gross motor skills, engage their senses, and explore the natural environment through purposeful play and discovery.
Personal growth is also central to the Reception experience. Children learn to form positive relationships, manage their emotions, take turns, and collaborate with others—skills that lay the groundwork for future success both in and out of the classroom.
At Edgware Primary School, we believe the Reception year is about more than just preparation for Year One—it’s about building the foundations for a lifetime of learning. We aim to ensure that every child leaves Reception as a curious, capable and confident learner, ready for the next stage of their journey.
