P.E.

Intent

At Edgware, Physical Education (PE) is an integral part of our Curriculum that is inclusive and engages all pupils, in a supportive and challenging environment. We aspire for children to acquire, develop and refine their practical skills and techniques; to further their knowledge and understanding of PE concepts and principles and develop their overall competence, to enjoy, and excel in, a broad range of sports and physical activities.

We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities which enable all children to succeed; to enjoy their learning; to be resilient and consistently strive to give their best efforts at all times and achieve their potential and personal best.

Children participate in competitive sport and through this, we teach children how to co-operate and collaborate effectively as part of a team and compete appropriately against others, adhering to the principles of fairness, sportsmanship and respect, values we hope to embed for future life.

We understand the importance PE, school sport and daily physical activity has on children's general health, fitness and mental wellbeing. We provide opportunities for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and we teach children the importance of leading healthy, active lives and making informed and appropriate lifestyle choices.

Pupils learn:

  • To master basic movements in EYFS and KS1
  • The ability to acquire new knowledge and skills exceptionally well and develop an in-depth understanding of PE.
  • The willingness to practise skills in a wide range of different activities and situations, alone, in small groups and in teams and to apply these skills in chosen activities to achieve exceptionally high levels of performance.
  • High levels of physical fitness.
  • A healthy lifestyle, achieved by eating sensibly, avoiding smoking, drugs and alcohol and exercising regularly.
  • The ability to remain physically active for sustained periods of time and an understanding of the importance of this in promoting long-term health and well-being.
  • The ability to take the initiative and become excellent young leaders, organising and officiating and evaluating what needs to be done to improve, and motivating and instilling excellent sporting attitudes in others.
  • Exceptional levels of originality, imagination and creativity in their techniques, tactics and choreography, knowledge of how to improve their own and others performance and the ability to work independently for extended periods of time without the need of guidance or support.
  • A keen interest in PE. A willingness to participate eagerly in every lesson, highly positive attitudes and the ability to make informed choices about engaging fully in extra – curricular sport.
  • The ability to swim at least 25 meters before the end of Year 6 and knowledge of how to remain safe in and around water.

Implementation

Children have two lessons across the week for PE. In order to ensure we are providing high quality teaching of skills, we work alongside specialist instructors. We use the Complete PE curriculum which we have made bespoke to our children's needs.

EYFS

Children develop different types of movements, coordination and control. Children have plenty of opportunities their fine and gross motor skills. They start this through sensory exploration and then develop this further, growing their strength, coordination and positional awareness using objects and adults to support them. We provide opportunities  through games to help children develop their core strength, stability, balance, spatial awareness, co-ordination and agility.

KS1&2

In KS1 curriculum focusses on fundamental key skills to develop early stages of tactical awareness and physical fitness elements of agility, balance and coordination through the introduction.

Curriculum content includes ball skills and team games, gymnastics and dance activities. Children are introduced to the early stages of games, gymnastics, dance, outdoor and adventurous and athletics.

At KS2 pupils continue to apply and develop a range of skills to enable them to become successful games players, dancers, gymnasts and athletes.

Across the year, children are involved in many sporting activities both in and out of school. We regularly enter sports competitions and have an annual sports day. Alongside this, children are taught what is a healthy diet and the importance of eating a good balanced diet. Across the school the children do the daily mile to ensure they are healthy. We have won the Gold Healthy Schools Award.

Our playground has fantastic gym equipment and other climbing equipment to help children develop their gross motor skills, balance, upper arm strength, increase stamina and exercise their bodies. Our MUGA (Multi Use Games Area) is also used for football, netball and basketball.

There are many physical and emotional benefits to playing outside. Outdoor exercise has proven benefits to mental wellbeing. Studies have suggested they reduce emotional and physiological stress.

Children in lower Key stage Two - Year 3, have swimming lessons to ensure that they learn to swim.

As per the National curriculum, children are taught to: swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively (for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke) perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

We also use our Core school values and Golden rules to encourage children to be regulated and ready to learn, have perseverance, be safe and resilient.

Impact

  • Assessment of Physical Skills and Knowledge
Teachers assess pupils’ progress against key learning objectives outlined in our PE curriculum. These include the development of core physical skills (such as coordination, agility, balance and control), understanding of game rules and tactics, and awareness of how physical activity supports a healthy lifestyle.

Impact will be measured by assessing against the Complete PE knowledge and skills statements for every area of PE through pupil tracking’ as:

    • Below
    • Just below
    • On track

We will look at the data analysis and analyse group and individual performance in the different areas, identifying         next steps.

  •  We evaluate the impact of our PE curriculum through the following methods:

  • Monitoring Pupil Participation and Engagement
We track participation in both curriculum PE and extracurricular activities, ensuring that all pupils—regardless of background or ability—are given opportunities to be active, try new sports, and develop a positive attitude towards physical activity.

  • Pupil Voice and Feedback
We regularly gather pupil feedback through surveys, discussions and sports leaders. This helps us understand how pupils feel about PE, what they enjoy, and what they would like more of, allowing us to adapt provision to meet their needs.

  • Lesson Observations and Learning Walks
Senior leaders and subject coordinators observe PE lessons to monitor the quality of teaching, pupil engagement and progression. This also supports ongoing professional development for staff delivering PE.

  • Celebrating Success and Personal Development
We track achievements in intra- and inter-school competitions and celebrate personal improvement and teamwork. PE contributes significantly to pupils’ development of resilience, leadership, and cooperation

  • Reviewing Curriculum Breadth and Ambition
Our curriculum is regularly reviewed to ensure it is broad, balanced, and ambitious, with clear progression across year groups.
